I hope all is well.  I think that Coeus is an excellent system for grant submission.  The system outlines all of the mandatory fields for system to system grant submissions and is flexible enough to use for grants which are submitted by another medium.  Someone with Access training and Excel experience will find Coeus extremely easy, but, research policy knowledge is most helpful because Coeus does not prompt you or create error messages if you are not following ALL NIH policy and procedures.  I do think it is better to assign an administrator to complete the applications.  I do not think that Coeus is designed for faculty members to submit on their own.  It can be time consuming for someone not working with the system regularly.  Coeus lite is designed for less frequent users and may work out better for faculty member submissions.  The system can, however, be designed to address the customer's specific needs.

In retrospect, I think that Coeus with proper training is a very useful tool for grant preparation, and routing. Improvements are necessary with almost any system, and Coeus is relatively new so this is to be expected.  UMB does have great systems' analysts and computer programmers who constantly address any concerns that we have and update our system very frequently.  Overall, the key to using this system is proper training.  In addition, good communication between Coeus users, systems' analysts, computer programers, and Coeus MIT representatives is crucial.  Coeus is shifting to help address reporting needs via the Awards' module of the system.  It functions as a database for information but reporting typically is done in our financial database and eRA commons.
