Following is the language from the NRSA policy statement. There is a limit to the tuition (which should be calculated by trainee). See below. For all Kirschstein-NRSA institutional research training grant awards, this budget category (tuition, fees, and health insurance) is calculated at the following rate: 100 percent of all costs up to $3,000 and 60 percent of costs above $3,000. Tuition, fees, and health insurance are awarded as a lump sum that can be allocated (without the prior approval of the NIH awarding office) based on recipient needs. http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/policy/nihgps_2003/NIHGPS_Part11.htm#_Init iation_of_Payback_Service -----Original Message----- From: Research Administration List [mailto:xxxxxx@hrinet.org] On Behalf Of Dorothy Canepari Sent: Friday, December 04, 2009 4:00 PM To: xxxxxx@hrinet.org Subject: Re: [RESADM-L] Kirschstein predoctoral tuition Dear Colleagues, I have a fairly simply question about T32 grants (I hope): We were awarded a certain amount of money to cover tuition and fees for 6 predoctoral trainees under a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Institutional Research Training Grant (T32). Is there a limit on how much money each predoctoral trainee can receive for tuition? Do we divide the tuition/fees award by 6 and cap each student's tuition at this amount, or can we spend various amounts on the different trainees as long as we don't overspend the total allotment? The reason I ask is that some of our older students are taking only a few credit hours and are spending very little on tuition, while the newer students are taking many more credits and spending much more. I've been given apposing advice on this topic and want to make sure I am following the rules correctly. By the way, our original award was made in 2005, so we are still under the "old" rules for Tuition, Fees, and Health Insurance. Thank you for your help!
