New NSF RCR Requirement Christa Johnson 06 Oct 2009 15:17 EST

Dear Colleagues:

I'm writing to ask what your institution is doing to prepare for the new
NSF RCR requirement for appropriate Responsible Conduct in Research
training of undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdocs
supported on NSF-funded projects.
For reference, here is the Federal Register Notice:
http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2009/E9-19930.htm

Specifically, I am wondering if your institution is using a web-based
certification process such as the CITI RCR training module, and if that
certification is part of a broader RCR training program. Is your
institution currently developing additional, more extensive training
through seminars/courses/workshops in response to this requirement? If
you are developing additional face-to-face training:
(a) will the course(s) be for credit?
(b) required for NSF-supported undergrad/grad students/postdocs only or
additional student populations as well?
(c) will tuition be waived, if a course is required for credit?
(d) how will you be tracking students for compliance purposes?
(e) are undergraduate students required to take a different course from
graduate students, or is it the same training?
(f) will Departments be able to fulfill this requirement through
existing courses, and if so, how will the training be tracked for
compliance purposes?
(g) once RCR training is complete and certified, how long is the
certification valid?

Thank you for your assistance.

Best wishes,
Christa
