The only time I can see anything other than patient meals as allowable are food
for conference grants.

Subject: [RESADM-L] Allowability of meals on NSF grant?
Hi all --
I'm trying to get an interpretation of whether or not a particular meal expense
would be reimbursable under an NSF grant. The PI describes it as a "research
luncheon." It was held at a local restaurant and attended by the co-PIs and
several lab members (all from our institution). No alcoholic beverages were
served.
I'm thinking that this is not an allowable cost, based on the NSF Grant
proposal guide which reads, "No NSF funds may be spent on meals or coffee
breaks for intramural meetings of an organization or any of its components,
including, but not limited to, laboratories, departments and centers." Am I
correct here? Do you know of circumstances under which such an expense
might be allowable? I'm just looking for second opinions lest I wrongfully deny
someone's request for payment.
Thanks --
Gabe Johnson
