Re: Allowability of meals on NSF grant? Lesley Zajac 30 Jul 2009 14:02 EST

Since all participants are from your institution, I would think this
would qualify as intramural and would not be allowable according to the
terms you quote below.

Subject: [RESADM-L] Allowability of meals on NSF grant?

Hi all --

I'm trying to get an interpretation of whether or not a particular meal
expense
would be reimbursable under an NSF grant. The PI describes it as a
"research
luncheon." It was held at a local restaurant and attended by the co-PIs
and
several lab members (all from our institution). No alcoholic beverages
were
served.

I'm thinking that this is not an allowable cost, based on the NSF Grant
proposal guide which reads, "No NSF funds may be spent on meals or
coffee
breaks for intramural meetings of an organization or any of its
components,
including, but not limited to, laboratories, departments and centers."
Am I
correct here? Do you know of circumstances under which such an expense
might be allowable? I'm just looking for second opinions lest I
wrongfully deny
someone's request for payment.

Thanks --

Gabe Johnson
