Once again, Ive had excellent and RADID responses from the NIH C06 construction staff... I asked for some clarification and here is their feedback: "The Project summary/abstract is a summary of the proposed activity that will be disseminated to the public if an award is made. The specific aims could be a good starting point for the text that is needed in a project summary, but the two are not identical. The specific aims are part of the 20 page limit." So, we will be following the SF424 instructions and providing a summary no more than 30 lines of text. From the SF 424 instructions: "Project Summary/Abstract The Project Summary must contain a summary of the proposed activity suitable for dissemination to the public. It should be a self-contained description of the project and should contain a statement of objectives and methods to be employed. It should be informative to other persons working in the same or related fields and insofar as possible understandable to a scientifically or technically literate lay reader. This Summary must not include any proprietary/confidential information. Please click the add attachment button to the right of this field to complete this entry. The first and major component of the Project Summary/Abstract (i. e., “Description”) is a Project Summary. It is meant to serve as a succinct and accurate description of the proposed work when separated from the application. State the application’s broad, long-term objectives and specific aims, making reference to the health relatedness of the project (i.e., relevance to the mission of the agency). Describe concisely the research design and methods for achieving the stated goals. This section should be informative to other persons working in the same or related fields and insofar as possible understandable to a scientifically or technically literate reader. Avoid describing past accomplishments and the use of the first person. Finally, please make every effort to be succinct. This section must be no longer than 30 lines of text, and follow the required font and margin specifications. An abstract which exceeds this allowable length may be flagged as an error by the agency upon submission. This would require a corrective action before the application will be accepted. The attachment must be in PDF " ERIN C. DAVIS Grants Development Specialist II Office of Research Guidance, E-275 Wadsworth Center, NYS DOH Empire State Plaza P.O. Subject org> Re: [RESADM-L] question on NIH C06's 05/01/2009 02:29 PM Please respond to Research Administration Discussion List <xxxxxx@hrinet. org> I just looked at our (successful) C06 application from 2004. At that time there were supplemental instructions that called for a "Program Overview", "concise (250 words or less) overview description of the proposed project stating long-term objectives and specific aims." We wrote this as we write an Abstract. [Remember that the PROJECT is the construction; not the resulting research] I'll bet that this is what they want in the Project Summary/Abstract section. I'd be happy to talk to people about our last abstract. My question is in regard to the R&R Other Project Information page, 6. Project Summary/Abstract. I am not finding anything in the FOA regarding this section, but it is highlighted in yellow, so I'm sure I can't submit without it. How are others handling this section? Has anyone had luck in getting answers to your questions from the C06 contact persons? Also, I'm a bit concerned about the G.g submission of this proposal--we're still waiting on Grants.gov to clean up last week's RC1 submissions. I'm guessing that the overall number of C06's will be fewer, but these construction projects are high profile proposals, so I guess I continue to worry until we are past yet another NIH deadline. It always seemed stupid to me. When you open the cover letter file, it does say mandatory. I’ve never noticed whether that’s true with other mechanisms. However, the RFA clearly states the cover letter is optional: Required Components: SF424 (R&R) (Cover component) Research & Related Other Project Information Research & Related Senior/Key Person Budget Information for Construction Programs (SF-424C) PHS398 Cover Page Supplement PHS398 Checklist Optional Components: PHS398 Cover Letter File We’re working on one, too. I had sent the post about the environmental impact form. The instructions for the C06 indicate that the PHS398 cover letter is an optional component. When the cover letter form is moved to the right side it then becomes mandatory? Since you can not open a form until it has been moved to the right side I, of course, am unable to see if it is highlighted while residing on the left side. I told you it was a stupid question.
