Hi Cheryl,

In such cases we generally work with the department to reduce the investigator's effort because total effort should not be over 100%.  We also have an institution-wide 98% cap for committed effort on research.  This leaves 2% for other non-research non-activities such as teaching and administration.   I'd be happy to chat with you about this over the phone if you think it would be helpful.

Note:  Effort can be more than salary but effort can never be below salary.  Also, since this is a contract, it most likely does not have a stated requirement concerning committed effort.
