We were all "dumped" by the system over the weekend :) Note that the
closing of Grants.gov over the weekend of Feb 7-8 was quite well
publicized. I told this group about it last week, NIH sent a wide
spread message, and it was noted on the Grants.gov site.
In general this system "Build" has been successful. No more "false
errors", no more inability to log in, no more virus messages that do
not refer to actual attachment file errors, and no long list of
impossible to understand errors.
The full description of the Build, including how to register is here
http://www.grants.gov/assets/SystemEnhancements2008-03A.pdf
Regarding the registration process, this is necessary because
Grants.gov must take over its own authentication activity. People
can still log in to submit, with the current password. However, if
you want to check an application status, you must re-register. I did
this
for all of our AOR's this morning. About 10 minutes per person.
Much of the necessary data are pre-populated. You need to put in a
Date of Birth -- I guess you can submit a free application on your
birthday? Is this an appropriate public data element. I do not
think so
and filled it with that perspective. You need to add a secret
question and answer -- I used the same one for all the staff, so we
can help each other remember. You then enter a password -- I used
the same one we had already. All pretty easy. If you
are already registered, then some of what Susan reports from the Help
Desk is not appropriate. Just log in as usual, click continue to log
in, and your data are presented.
At UMich we have been submitting quite nicely today, looking up
applications in the list, and very happy to have all the emails with
the Grant number at the beginning of the subject line. I forward all
Grants.gov messages into a special folder, sorted by subject and so can
see if all 4 are there.

We finally got that feedback from a user who shared their answer on
the G.g blog. Thanks to whoever shared the info! Below is the blog
comment (one caveat, we received several reset messages and tried
them all till one worked and logged us in so we could reset the
password back to our old one.)
I just got off the phone with grants.gov and with the new server
change over the weekend all persons that were on what they call the
Legacy Servers did not make the move to the newer servers. So - we
all have to go to grants.gov and reset our passwords (we can use our
old ones) and re-fill out our profiles again.
Steps:
1) Go to http://www.grants.gov/
2) On the right side of the page, under "Applicants," click on
"Applicant Login"
3) Click "Continue to Login"
4) Select "Forgot my Password"
5) Follow the instructions, "enter your username"
6) You will then receive an email from grants.gov with a temporary
password. Click on the link in the email and cut and paste the
temporary password into the appropriate box.
7) Complete your profile
8) After you complete your profile, you will then be asked to create
your new password. You can use your old one.
9) Once re-set - then you are good to go and can submit proposals
grants.gov again
