Re: Research space for new investigator for new RO1 submission Charlie Hathaway 21 Jan 2009 17:21 EST
If the space she has is really her own, but just in a big room, then that is a LOT better than a bench in someone else's lab. Make VERY sure that reviewers understand that this is NOT one of those "postdoc becomes instructor and advisor wants her to get R01 and keep doing his/her projects." I agree with Michael...this is a red flag of sorts and you need to be very clear about the situation vis-a-vis space but also independence and institutional commitment. Does she have an office? Where will she read, write, and think? Charlie > When showing support for a proposal, an institution does not have to state > that there is a separate space which is available only to the PI. I have submitted a number of proposals for junior PIs in the same situation, and what I focused on was that; yes, it was shared lab space, but what was most important was what the institution DID have available to > the person writing the proposal, namely: access to specific scientific equipment, appropriate storage (freezer/dry/chemical), approximate amount > of space in the said lab that could be used for this work, and other physical assets available to the scientist. > Show that the space is shared - but also show why that shared element is an asset in itself. > Regards, > Michael DeShazo, CRA > "It is not the lack of resources that stops one from accomplishing things; > it is a lack of resourcefullness" > ~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Budget/Fiscal Analyst Lead > Grant and Contract Accounting, Team 6 > 3917 University Way NE > Box 351122 > Seattle, WA 98105-1122 > Team Phone: 206-616-4968 > Team Email: xxxxxx@u.washington.edu<mailto:xxxxxx@u.washington.edu> FX: 206-543-0764 > > Alternate Phone: 206-616-8062 > WEB: http://www.washington.edu/research/gca/office/ > ~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= > > From: Research Administration List [mailto:xxxxxx@hrinet.org] On Behalf > Of Arthur Eisenberg > Sent: Wednesday, January 21, 2009 12:49 PM > To: xxxxxx@hrinet.org > Subject: [RESADM-L] Research space for new investigator for new RO1 submission > > We have a new investigator writing her first RO1. > > Does she need Institutional Designation of space that is soley belonging to her - a room, for example. > She currently has laboratory space in a larger laboratory but not her own > room. > > The institution is reluctant to provide a support letter because there is > not going to be additional space assigned to this new investigator. > > So what kind of Space Support is needed for a new investigator. > > THANKS in advance > > Arthur Eisenberg > Research Administration Rm 928 > SUNY College of Optometry > 33 West 42nd Street > New York, NY 10036 > > xxxxxx@sunyopt.edu<mailto:xxxxxx@sunyopt.edu> > 212-938-4159 - voice > 212-938-5678 - fax > > > ====================================================================== Instructions on how to use the RESADM-L Mailing List, including > subscription information and a web-searchable archive, are available via our web site at http://www.hrinet.org (click on "Listserv Lists") ====================================================================== > > > ====================================================================== > Instructions on how to use the RESADM-L Mailing List, including subscription information and a web-searchable archive, are available via our web site at http://www.hrinet.org (click on "Listserv Lists") > ====================================================================== > ====================================================================== Instructions on how to use the RESADM-L Mailing List, including subscription information and a web-searchable archive, are available via our web site at http://www.hrinet.org (click on "Listserv Lists") ======================================================================
