Re: PUIs and Return of Indirect Costs Shriver, Sandra 18 Nov 2008 10:52 EST

Our Office of Research retains 50% of the IDC generated. We distribute
50% to the departments on a quarterly basis. We just recently started
giving that 50% directly to the School Dean and he/she determines how to
spend it within their departmental areas. We previously used to
distribute it among the School Dean, Dept. Chair and the PI. But that
became too cumbersome to process and track. Some of the budget managers
were not utilizing their funds and our Board of Governors wanted to know
why we had unspent revenues accumulating. Our upper-level
administrators decided to give it directly to the Deans because it would
be used for better purposes and not stock-piled.

Subject: [RESADM-L] PUIs and Return of Indirect Costs

Hello,

I'm looking for information about how predominantly undergraduate
institutions are handling the return of indirect costs at their
institutions. What formula is being used to return dollars to units
generating the funds (% to general fund; % to provost; % to deans)? Are
any PUIs returning IDC funds to the departments and/or the PI?

Thanks,

Penny
