Re: Presidential Min-Grant Incentive Kristy Ford 23 Oct 2008 12:48 EST

Hi, Deborah! While I was working at Georgia Souther University a couple of years ago, we held a student competition. It was in coordination with the faculty research awards. We allowed a student and faculty to work together on a research project that would eventually be presented to a professional audience. It was required that the student collaborate with a faculty member. The competition was very successful! We had a number of applications, and we were pleasantly surprised at the number of undergraduate students who took a deep interest in conducting research. I do not have much detailed information to give you, since I am no longer at that institution. However, in my opinion, requiring the students to collaborate with a faculty member significantly contributed to its success.

Hello all.

Our president wants to implement a 'mini-grant' incentive program to support faculty and student research. We are a small PUI attempting to create and sustain research opportunities for students.

The idea is to utilize a competition and award $500-$1500 to winning applicants for purposes of travel to present at regional, national, or international academic conferences, support for equipment or other items required for a research project, etc.

Do any of you have this type of program? Any suggestions or links to information? What results did you get?

As always, many thanks for your replies.
