I agree with the other responses. I worked for a PI with 46 years of continuous funding who was given the same advice -- to operate under a no cost extension while the continuation proposal was under review, in part to retain the original grant number and continue the suffix numbering. Also, progress reporting is contained in the competitive renewal application, and many investigators balk at the idea of also submitting a final report. Sarah B. I think that it has something to do with how many years of continuous funding and how that looks to reviewers. A truly final technical report and/or grant closeout would not be appropriate so long the investigator has a pending application with the same grant number (through the -A2 designation). I cannot think of a reason how submitting a final progress report can be detrimental to the project's likelihood to be funded in the new cycle. Has anyone experienced any problems with closing grants and then getting a renewal funded?
