Re: 9 month contracts Kristy Ford 11 Sep 2008 16:27 EST

For a 9-month, contracted employee, the remaining 3 months are the summer months. During these summer months, the faculty can teach, work on funded projects, or both. During the summer, 3 months equals 100%, and during the academic year, 9 months equals 100%. An academic calendar separates the 9-month contracted appointment from the optional 3-month appointment during the summer. Part of the faculty's contract is that a portion of their work is to be research, whether it is funded or not.

Hope this helps!

I need some advice on how institutions handle 9 month contracts. My
institution currently has all faculty as 100% employees. We are
considering a revision of that process to allow faculty greater
opportunities. How do other institutions handle faculty time? Those
with 9 month contracts, are the remaining 3 months limited to actual
summer time or is the time spread over the course of a year?

Does anyone have a program that gives faculty a base salary but allow
them to augment their income up to a higher level with grant funding?
How does that work? I know some institutions have it where some of their
faculty have to bring in all of their income. Does anyone have it
split, some from hard dollars, the balance from soft?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Matt
