Re: DUNS numbers Lawrence Waxler 05 Jun 2008 13:04 EST

Charlie,

As a part of the University of Maine System, with seven campuses and a central administrative office, we have just one EIN. While we have managed to collect many DUNS numbers over the years, and also tried to shed many focusing on one primary number, the notion from my perspective is to have at least one DUNS number for each campus for separation/reporting purposes. I would imagine that if an institution is large enough or has units which are distinct enough, than this same methodology could be applied.

We do have some agencies (mostly State) which recognize a suffix to our EIN, but this seems to be a relic from another era - the one which preceded the use of DUNS numbers.

Can anyone educate me on the possibility or advisability of a single
institution (i.e. single EIN) using different DUNS numbers for different
purposes? The specific issue is whether a single institution can or
should create a new DUNS number for the purpose of submitting federal
proposals and distinguishing submissions/grants from different divisions
within the institution.
I have been told that sometimes this is done by adding a suffix (e.g.
-0001) to the existing number.
Anyone done this?
thanks
