Re: DUNS numbers Bivona and Kleinberg BML 05 Jun 2008 12:40 EST

Possible? Yes! Advisable? Not in my opinion. We currently have six DUNS
numbers associated with our single EIN. I would have to search my records
to give you the exact reasons why this happened. (We operated for 50
years with just one DUNS number before we split them out.) Off the top of
my head I can tell you that a large part of the reason had to do with the
way NIH was reporting our award data. NIH changed the IMPAC system - at
one time they could report based on performing institution, which worked
for us. Then they started reporting only by awardee, so we basically set
up six different "awardees". The multiple DUNS works for what we need, but
the result is kind of a nightmare....we have six different IPFs at NIH
where our awards reside. This requires six different accounts for
Commons work and FSR filing, etc.

Can anyone educate me on the possibility or advisability of a single
institution (i.e. single EIN) using different DUNS numbers for different
purposes? The specific issue is whether a single institution can or
should create a new DUNS number for the purpose of submitting federal
proposals and distinguishing submissions/grants from different divisions
within the institution.
I have been told that sometimes this is done by adding a suffix (e.g.
-0001) to the existing number.
Anyone done this?
thanks
