Re: How much help do you give your PI on Grants.gov Bob Beattie 26 Mar 2008 10:38 EST

From a recent look at our data, the estimate is that 8% of faculty
prepare their applications. Rest are done by unit level staff.

Our University Grants Office does no grant preparation. Cyndie, Is
that a good answer for your needs? :)

Maybe you need to differentiate among different size institutions and
numbers of submissions. We are doing a couple thousand applications
a year. Even with 6 Grants Offices, and equal support staff, they are
barely able to keep up with the flow. I refer to just those who deal
with G.g. I spend much time giving classes and answering questions/
solving problems. Our grants officers give advice and check
applications.

I believe that the PI's should be doing their science and their
administrators should be doing administrative tasks. PIs write the
scientific part of the application and develop general budget
guidelines. Their staff or unit staff do the forms and other
attachments. This model might work for a large volume institution
but not for small schools. Isn't the model for each place very
dependent on what the local expectations are, and what local
resources are? In any event, the less forms filling PI's need to do
the better.

We would like to know how other institutions are handling grants.gov.

1) Does the PI enter the data in grants.gov or does someone who
works with the PI?

2) Does the sponsored programs office enter the data?

We are trying to determine what level of service is provided by most
sponsored programs offices.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
 Cyndie
