Re: Grants.gov Adobe Solution Smiley, Rick 30 Jan 2008 09:13 EST

Hey,

My reading of the note at Grants.gov is that the forms are being
modified so they simply will not open in any other application than
Reader 8.1.1 - attempting to do so would generate an error message.

Am I misreading?

Rick,

You can set Adobe Reader 8.1.1 as the default application but it can get
complicated when other forms of Adobe, specifically Adobe Professional
are on the same machine. This can particularly come into play when the
PI opens the Grants.gov package while at the same time s/he has Adobe
Professional open to create PDFs for upload as attachments.

I think Steve Shapiro's message yesterday was good in that it alerts us
to potential problems such as this. We must figure out how to advise
our faculty so that we can avoid the tragic circumstance of a proposal
not making the deadline due to a conflict in Adobe applications on
his/her machine. I am working now on a way to translate this
information in a useful way for our faculty and staff.

Thanks,
Steve

Hey, Isn't some of this concern about files opening in the wrong Adobe
application potentially addressed by this Grants.gov note -
http://grants.gov/aboutgrants/program_status_archive.jsp. If the files
can be made so they simply will not open in anything but Reader 8.1.1 *
the problem may be solved. East Carolina UniversityTomorrow Starts
