multiple Adobe Programs Bob Beattie 29 Jan 2008 11:26 EST

Keep in mind that there are many different brands of computers,
running different operating systems, and browsers.
Something true for one machine/system might not be exactly the case
on another set up.

In general. It is supposed to be possible for a computer to have
various Adobe products running at the same time.
Remember, however, to download, fill out, save, and submit an Adobe
Forms application from Grants.gov you need to use
ADOBE READER 8.1.1. No other Adobe product is supposed to work for
this. That is to say, you can open and save, but you cannot submit.

As I write this, I have Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.1.1 running, and
have opened the list of new NIH Status Codes with it. I have also
opened with ADOBE READER 8.1.1, the Adobe Forms sample application I
sent earlier.

I am using a Mac with OSX 10.4.11. I have a very good IT support
group who install everything and set preferences.

When I try this on my Dell, which has Windows XP Professional, I get
different results. There I have Adobe Professional 7.0 and ADOBE
READER 8.1.1. I can open the Adobe Form Application with reader, but
if I try to then open another .pdf file, it also opens in Reader,
even though I try to open with Professional. If I have Professional
open, then the grant application will open with Professional. The
program is listed in the top of the window. I will soon get
Professional Acrobat 8.1.1 and try then.

Thus with a non-MAC, I think one must be very careful to open the
application in Reader and DO NOT have the Professional program open
at the same time. Installed but not running at the time. Maybe with
Vista I could open files with both programs. However, if I had
Vista, I could NOT open PureEdge applications :(

So to Robert's question below, if he means, having a problem with a
different version of Adobe other than ADOBE READER 8.1.1, then yes.
You must have ADOBE READER 8.1.1. If he means versions of Adobe
programs other than READER 8.1.1, then no. You can have versions
other than 8.1.1 along with Reader 8.1.1. (as I noted above I had
Professional 7 on my Dell). You may, need to close programs other
than Reader when you are filling in an application.

Hope this helps.

Not being a computer expert, I have a question--

Is there a problem with having a version of Adobe other than 8.1.1 on
the computer?
