As a result of the discussion on this list, I removed Adobe Professional from my computer (I have the CD and can always reload it). I then found I could not open any pdf documents at all. My computer seemed to still be looking for Adobe Professional. I followed the provided instructions (thank you!) regarding going into Windows Explorer. I found no pdf file type at all on my list! I clicked on "new" and then typed pdf. Then, in the "opens with" box I chose to pick from a list of programs, and I selected Adobe 8.1 (I had earlier made sure my Reader was the correct 8.1.1 version).
I now find that everything works fine if I try to open a pdf file from my hard drive or from Internet Explorer. Haven't figured out yet how to fix this for Netscape, but in proposal work I always use Internet Explorer anyway.
Because of everyone's comments, I am hesitant to load Adobe Professional onto my PC again. I think I'm going to wait a bit and see how this pans out.
This has been a very helpful exchange!
