Re: Alternate IRB Process for Non-Federally Funded Research??

Go to Georgia Southern University's website. When you get to the ORSSP website, you'll find the IRB Policies/Procedures Manual and the required application forms in the compliance section. Most of their research is non-medical, but the IRB still requires that OHRP's federal regulations be followed (45 CFR 46). The policies/procedures were written for GA Southern based on that code of federal regulations. They apply the IRB policies regardless of whether or not that particular study is federally funded. The application forms are geared more towards non-medical research at Georgia Southern and may be useful.
Hope this helps!

Help! Help! Help! Does anyone out there:
(1)use an application, criteria, and/or review process for non-federally
funded human subject research that differs from what is required by OHRP for
federally-funded research or
(2) have an application, criteria, and/or review process for non-medical
protocols that differs from what you use for medical protocols?
If so, just point me to your website.
Our social/behavioral IRB is frustrated (far more than I am) with trying to
fit the biomedically-driven regs to the types of research our
(non-biomedical) faculty do. Members have expressed strong interest in
creating a different process for non-federally funded research that fits our
type of research better (and still addresses Belmont principles as required
for the FWA). So I would also be interested in your thoughts on this:
Is this an idea that is long overdue (and could we eventually provide a
model two track system that equitably protects participants but is far
easier for non-medical faculty to negotiate)? Or are we putting ourselves
on a slippery slope, sliding away from best practices and perhaps increasing
institutional risk by being "different" from most other universities.
Thanks.
Barbara
