Executive Director & Assistant Vice Provost for Research Office for Sponsored Programs The University of Connecticut, ranked among the top 25 public universities in the nation, is seeking an experienced leader for the position of Executive Director of the Office for Sponsored Programs. The University is in the second phase of a multi-billion dollar building and renovation program to create one of the most technologically advanced and physically attractive research extensive universities in the nation. The Position: Reporting to the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Education, the Executive Director will lead the University's sponsored program mission and establish effective partnerships between the University, faculty, public and private funding agencies, and the business and industrial communities within the state and the nation. The Executive Director is responsible for nearly $100 million in sponsored program funding and the associated pre- and post-award administration, contract management, electronic research administration, and regulatory compliance. S/he will oversee the Office for Sponsored Programs budget and all personnel actions to include hiring, training and evaluation of approximately 40 staff members, with responsibility for information and technical support on externally sponsored research opportunities, proposal development, and budget preparation. The Executive Director develops and implements policy and works closely with the Office of Research Compliance, including the IRB and the IACUC, the Center for Science and Technology commercialization, and the university's budget and cost analysis units. Some of the qualifications sought in a candidate include: * a master's or doctoral degree with 7-10 years including management experience in academic research administration, specifically in pre- and post-award sponsored programs administration * well developed organizational, written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; * a consensus-building leadership style; creativity in the encouragement of research and entrepreneurship * knowledge of state and federal research regulations, including compliance programs, and state-of-the-art electronic research administration tools and processes * experience in financial management systems and a knowledge of accounting principles. * familiarity with contract negotiation and intellectual property issues is highly desirable.
