NIH math & rounding for Grants.gov submissions Schreiber, Hollie 08 Oct 2007 10:57 EST

Hello all! I'm about to submit yet another round of NIH grants. There
used to be a "bug" in the system regarding the budget figures and the
way it calculates indirect costs. Previously, if your indirect cost
base multiplied by your F&A rate resulted in a non-round number (i.e.
IDC base of 139,723 x 46.4% = 64,831.472) you could not use that
non-round number, nor could you round it (can't enter 64,831.47);
rounding it results in an error that prevents submission. In the past,
we have manipulated our IDC base so that the final number comes out even
(IDC base of 139,750 x 46.4% = 64,844.00).

Does anyone know if this has been fixed? I've spoken to the help desk
folks (numerous times) at NIH, Commons and Grants.gov with no straight
answer.

To be on the safe side, we can continue to manipulate our IDC base;
however, we'd like to avoid this if possible. It's not only inaccurate,
but it's a real logistical pain to do so. I also don't want to just
assume it's been fixed and have my proposal rejected for the error.

Does anyone have a definite answer?
