I think your PI needs to think more about the objectives, timeline,
budget for each objective and exactly how much the "collaborator" will
perform on one or more of the objectives in terms of time. Finally, PI
needs to think more about exactly how the outcomes of the
"collaborator's" inputs will effect the impact of the project on the
science. I'd talk to the PI again face to face to help in this vein.
