Hello Sara,
On adjuncts on a proposal: I recently costed for two researchers
(co-PIs) as adjunct profs. And I figured according to the salaries
they would have earned at their prospective universities. This
involved figuring out exchange rates (the Australian dollar to the
US dollar, e.g.) and following AY time. On a grant you can pay
whatever you like for someone classified as an adjunct, just make
the cost reasonable. If this adjunct is essential to the scope of a
grant, then by all means pay them accordingly.
Somewhere in the faculty handbook at FSU there's detail on how much
time over (in the form of a percentage) a faculty (contractual or
tenure track or even 'versus') can spend and be paid for working on
a research or creative project. it's time above instruction. And you
would cost that percentage above the current set salary (the one the
consultant is being paid).
I hope I've helped in some way!
Sincerely,
Gina

I have an adjunct that will be working on a grant next summer. As
we all know, adjuncts are paid at a very minimal rate. Do you have
to use this same rate of pay to determine summer salary, as you
would for faculty? If not, how would you determine the proper rate
of pay?
In a related issue, we have a full-time contractual faculty member
that would like to do some grant work during the fall semester. As
a full-time contractual faculty, he is being hired only to teach 4
courses and is not expected to participate in research/scholarship
or service. Therefore, 100% of his effort is devoted to
instruction. Can he receive additional compensation from a grant if
he takes on these "extra" tasks? If so, how would you determine his
rate of pay?
