I had no idea we had the power to act as self-imposed moderators to
issue cease and desist orders for what we consider junk messages. Is
there an online listing of what is to be considered junk or is it more
of an individual judgement call? Personally, I don't see where the
original post was junk, nor the two immediate responses. The last two
threads, one of which is my own, I would consider junk, so I hereby
apologize for contributing to the perceived problem.

We will soon be hiring a new SPYC (sponsored projects yoga coordinator).
Interested? Deciding who gets to go to the mid-morning and
mid-afternoon sessions is a logistical nightmare! And making sure there
is no deep relaxation periods on deadline days..let me tell you!

Hi Charlie,
With all due respect, it looks like you are at one of the few places
where someone of your position is actually very regarded/respected by
his/her faculty and department. I am not so lucky, as I know a lot of
us are either. I do have to agree with you on considering researchers
in dire situations, but I would not be embarrassed by this survey at
all. In my area, some persons do not understand the true importance of
our work and why research administration is stressful in a different way
from other administrative positions.
Maybe I should work at your institute!!! Are there any positions
available?
:-)

I have gigatons of respect for all of you, but I think we have to
consider our stress in relation to that of researchers these days,
particularly those who can't just go back to teaching or the clinic when
the horrible grant success rates leave them dry. I would be embarrassed
if a PI in funding despair found out that a survey was asking about my
ability to get lots of sleep, go running, and eat vegetables because my
job was so tough.

I'll second that! Of course, I might be a bit biased ...

Jennifer,

If you do this survey again, you might want to include a question that
will identify where the person is actually working, pre-proposal, post
proposal or at the dept level. With the advent of the grants.gov
mandates, I believe that the most stressful positions at this time are
at pre-proposal level. I work at the dept level and I am sure that my
stress level is considerable lower than those dealing with proposal
submittal deadlines and a system that is less than perfect.

Just goes together like a hand and glove, doesn't it??? Or does it???

I am conducting an anonymous 8 question survey of my colleagues for a
paper I am writing on stress perception among research administrators
with an anxiety expert, Dr. Olga Brawman-Mintzer.

Please consider taking 5-7 minutes of your time to participate.

The survey has been reviewed by the IRB at the Medical University of
South Carolina, HR#17440 and has qualified as Exempt Research.

The survey can be found at:
