Position Available - Vice President for Research Nicholas Gere 24 Jul 2007 12:07 EST

The University of New England (UNE), a private comprehensive institution
located on the southern coast of Maine, seeks an innovative and
experienced leader to serve as its new Vice President for Research.
Ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the best regional
universities in the Northeast, UNE has established a research focus in
selected fields of health, marine, pharmaceutical, and natural sciences
and osteopathic medicine. The University has expanded research over
the past decade and is positioning itself for further growth. The Vice
President for Research will spearhead the development of a research
agenda and infrastructure that will guide the University to a new level
of success and national prominence.

Fostering an innovative and growing research enterprise, the Vice
President for Research reports to the President and serves as a member
of the President's Cabinet. As the chief research officer for the
University, s/he will work with the administration and faculty to
develop and support the strategic positioning of all research programs,
centers and institutes, as well as to build partnerships with numerous
internal and external constituencies to advance the University's
research mission and goals. S/he will be expected to define and
communicate the University's research vision, programs, achievements,
and aspirations to internal stakeholders and legislative bodies,
corporations, and foundations at the local, regional and national
levels. Additionally s/he will have responsibility and authority for
the Office of Sponsored Programs, research compliance, technology
transfer, and federal grant and contract relationships, as well as
congressional relations and pursuit of federal funding allocations.

This is an exciting opportunity for a research professional with a
proven record of excellence in strategic and operational leadership of a
research enterprise as well as a track record of external support. The
successful candidate must be skilled in managing complex programs and
will possess a sound knowledge of competitive grant processes,
procedures and regulations. An excellent communicator, s/he will
demonstrate a commitment to the ethical conduct of disciplinary and
interdisciplinary research, as well as the sensitivity to understand,
appreciate, and encourage varied scholarship within and across
disciplines. The ability to ‘lead by example’ by maintaining
involvement in an active extramurally funded research project is highly
desirable. An earned doctoral degree from an accredited institution and
a record of scholarship and externally funded research commensurate with
expectations for a tenured, full professor in one of the University's
departments are required. For more details on this position and the
application process visit www.une.edu/hr/vacancylist.asp. Processing of
applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is
filled. The University of New England is an Equal Opportunity /
Affirmative Action Employer and welcomes female and minority candidates.
Interested persons should submit a C.V. and cover letter electronically
to: Bill Allen, Human Resources Generalist, at xxxxxx@une.edu.
