Re: Pre-award metrics Molly Daniel 26 Jun 2007 15:18 EST

When I was working at the Univ. of Mississippi some years ago, we were
fortunate enough to have a faculty member volunteer to do a special
project aimed at determining the barriers (perceived or real) to faculty
members conducting sponsored research. She was an ideal person to
conduct such an inquiry, and the timing was perfect since the OSP office
and sponsored programs in general were the beneficiary of renewed
emphasis and support on the campus (this was 1988).

At any rate, I recall that the information gathered in the survey
conducted was very useful to our office in making a case for many things
-- a research council, improved research administration policies,
improved central services, etc. The point is that any initiative to
measure success ought to be well grounded in a determination of what
your "customer" wants. I agree with Charlie about the need to continue
to monitor it until you retire.

Subject: Re: [RESADM-L] Pre-award metrics

I think the best thing to do is set up a Committee to define and measure
"success in pre-award services". Include all kinds of people at all
levels. Be sure to seek complete agreement on precisely how to analyze,
interpret, and utilize the results of all surveys and other data.
Schedule monthly or quarterly meetings. Serve good food. Let everyone
talk and talk.

During the Committee's discussion period, continue to do all the good
things that you know are important to faculty morale, academic spirit,
school reputation, and long-term financial benefit. As always, be on
the lookout for those few grant seeking efforts where your particular
talents will be remembered and applauded when the money arrives.
Examples might include grants for institutional facilities or actively
assisting a brand new assistant prof in securing a nice junior faculty
development grant.

Continue to monitor the Committee's progress until you retire.
