Dear Colleagues:
My name is Jeanine Stiles, Associate Director for Administration of the UC
Davis Cancer Center and I am seeking your help. I am looking for benchmark
data which I have not been able to obtain through the NCURA and SRA
websites.
As a department administrator we handle approximately $33 million in
research contracts and grants. In our department, I have two FTE handling
pre and post award for this level of funding. I cannot seem to convince
those who allocate my department operation budget that this is a
significant amount of work for two people. I continue to get turned down
for additional FTE to help with pre and post award management.
These two FTE are responsible for proposal preparation and post award
financial management and closeout, many of these proposals being P30, PO1,
UO1 and U10 mechanisms but also many RO1’s. I need to know if there is any
benchmark data that states how much extramural funding one FTE should
handle. Keep in mind this is at the departmental level and not in the
Office of Sponsored Programs.
If any of you have information or data that you can share or know of a
website that I can get information, I would be extremely grateful. If you
feel comfortable sharing your own department staffing and funds managed
that would be very useful data. I will be happy to compile this
information and send it back to the list serve to share my findings.
In advance, I thank you for your time and truly appreciate your help.
