Non-English speaking subjects Lori Messer 16 Feb 2007 16:55 EST

Good Afternoon,

Our IRB has been discussing when translated documents should be back translated vs. accepted on faith that the PI is providing an accurate translation of the approval consent form. Would anyone be willing to share procedures they've developed for research that involves non-English speaking subjects?

For example:

Do you require that the PI submit a signed document verifying that the translation is accurate if a translation service is not used?

Does the IRB assume the expense for back translations or certified translations?

Do you as a matter of course have foreign language documents (surveys, consents) verified and notify the PI that you are doing so?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Lori
