SUMMARY:
Develops and manages the integrated health sciences research operations at
the Spartanburg Regional Health System (SRHS).   The mission of Heath
Sciences Research is to support a complete patient-oriented enterprise,
allowing SRHS to manage, support and foster growth and innovation,
implement industry-best practices, and provide an environment for
conducting safe, compliant, and scientifically valuable patient-oriented
research.

The high-level objectives for the Director of Health Sciences Research are:

• Provide an expedient and effective environment to conduct and grow
research supported by trained personnel and written policies and
guidelines.
• Protect patients’ rights and welfare throughout the process.
• Improve the overall stature of the research enterprise at SRHS
• Increase sponsorship’s confidence and support of research at SRHS
• Facilitate a strategic planning process for research, which builds
on the strengths or SRHS and contributes to growth of SRHS as a whole.
• Oversee and coordinate data management and reporting for research,
ensuring compliance with sponsor requirements, associated regulations, and
Institutional Review Board guidelines.
• Participate in the development and implementation of research
policies and procedures, and facilitates strategic interactions with
sponsors for individual and collaborative research opportunities.
These core job components are aligned with the mission of Clinical
Research Affairs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Oversees the planning, implementation, and administration of
research including clinical trials and innovation adoption
2. Ensures compliance with sponsor requirements and associated
legislation, regulations, guidelines, and polices governing the conduct of
human subject research.
3. Prepares and submits comprehensive reports to funding agencies,
regulatory bodies, and other interested parties.
4. Helps develop relationships with potential sponsors; facilitates
development of new investigations between SRHS and sponsors; leads the
development of new protocols involving sponsor
funding/products/intellectual capital
5. Oversees contracts and budgets in accordance with SRHS and federal
guidelines.
6. Trains staff and serves as a primary advisor and resource
regarding compliance with research sponsor and regulatory agency
requirements.
7. Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes work
allocation, training, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and
makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to
achieve peak productivity and performance.
8. Develops or assists with the development and implementation of
policies and procedures consistent with those of the organization to
ensure efficient and safe operation of the unit.
9. Participates in development and implementation of short-and long-
range planning and develops and implements projects and programs to assist
in accomplishment of established goals.
10. Provides consultation to, and liaison/coordination between
investigators, ancillary departments, research subjects, sponsoring
organizations, regulatory bodies, SRHS and the Department of Health
Sciences Research
11. Facilitate SHRS’ participation in research initiatives as a member
of Health Sciences South Carolina (HSSC)
12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by SRHS
executive management.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Training:  MBA/MHA or equivalent
Experience:  - 3 years experience managing research operations within a
health provider or industry environment
 - 7+ years within the research and/or innovation adoption
field

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Knowledge of all federal and state regulations and guidelines
pertaining to the conduct of human subjects research
• Ability to foster effective working relationships within a team
environment.
• Knowledge and understanding of sound principles, methods, systems,
and processes for controlled research involving human subjects.
• Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of laboratory and clinical practices as related to the
conduct of research.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively
communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a
diverse community.
• Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing,
prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
• Knowledge of statistical data collection, analysis, tracking, and
reporting systems, methods, and techniques.
• Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range
goals.
• Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures,
formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and
procedures.
• Knowledge and understanding of the nature, guidelines, standards,
and operating requirements of Institution Review Boards
• Advanced critical thinking skills and ability to take appropriate
corrective action.
• Employee development and performance management skills.
