Re: PureEdge Viewer for Macs question Robert Beattie 10 Jan 2007 11:02 EST

Barbara, Thanks for the positive comment about UM.

I missed the original question as I was just at the FDP meeting,
listening to all the new things the new Vendor (General Dynamics) for
Grants.gov (Integrator they are called) is going to do. It was all
about what I would call the engine, while we grants people are
concerned about the interior aspects, to use a car analogy. Where
are the cup holders and how does the radio work. Not much on that
last part presented. But I gave them our list of what Research
Administrators want. The new manager of G.g is very anxious to get a
good product, so there is hope. The General Dynamics folks too seem
interested -- they came to the meeting which shows a good start.

Regarding the Mac situation for the present. While I was in a
meeting last Sunday, I showed a person sitting next to me, who had an
nice Intel Mac laptop, how to download the new IBM Viewer Program.
She did so and then I gave her a complete application I happen to
have with me. She opened it, looked around and hit the submit
button. The login screen appeared, I signed in with my username and
password and the "Do you want to submit" screen came up. So it worked!

The error message that Simone refers to may well be a result of her
trying to install without administrator access. The install must be
at the admin level. The program must stay where it is installed. It
can be put on the Dock (a cool Mac thing that shows frequently used
programs on a sidebar), but must stay in the folder where it is
installed.

I believe the Mac problem is solved. As Simone notes, the release
notes are not up to date. I have gotten applications that were
created on a non-Mac and could open with Mac with no problem. I now
hope that I will be able to use my iPhone to download, fill in and
submit applications :)

If anyone does download the new IBM Viewer for Mac, please let me
know how it goes. I will compile comments and send to Grants.gov.
If people have problems or questions feel free to contact me directly.

As a "by the way" comment, what will we call the new General Dynamics
program? No more PureEdge Forms. Who likes "Adobe Forms?" That is
too generic as Adobe already has meaning in other contexts. Maybe we
need a term that trans-sends the actual product. If there is System
to System as S2S, maybe the ex-PureEdge approach is Person to
System: P2S. The Grants.gov manager said she was open to suggestions.

I recommend that people try the new Mac stuff. Much effort has gone
in to getting this for us - Grants.gov, NIH, IBM, FDP and others.

keep in touch.

My understanding is that until the Adobe version is adopted on April
1, 2007, this isn't really going to work with MACs. The folks at the
University of Michagan probably are the most knowledgable about the
MAC/Grants.gov conundrum. Good luck. bAt 02:47 PM 1/9/2007, you wrote:
