Folks, Every individual and every university is different. Before going all out and instituting a mentoring program of the type you are talking about here, it might be a good idea to poll faculty and find out what they want, what they are willing to do to support a mentoring program...in short, what they think about it. I suspect that most will want administrative help in getting the forms and details taken care of for them so that they can spend their time on perfecting the project description and pieces thath only they can do. My advice to researchers writing proposals is very basic: **first, start early (in fact, start far enough ahead of the sponsor deadline so that you can put the text down for a week or two and then come back to it for editing); **second, ask colleagues for comment and critique (and the colleagues do NOT have to be at the "home" university); **third, come to me for help with budgets, forms, etc. my two cents worth, Elsa Elsa G. I further think that the success of such a program is dependent upon: * Selection of "mentees" including, perhaps, a strict competitive process for entering. * Selection of mentors * Matching of mentees and mentors * The active participation, at the very least of the appropriate Dean, Dept. Chair, etc. Research offices can offer such services, but in my experience it really takes the teeth of the academic heads to make it successful in the long run. John John R. It's probably still a good idea, but there's only so much time in the day... I think Central Michigan University has such a program and is successful. Am I right CMU? The idea is to seek faculty members who have successful track records of obtaining competitive funding to serve as mentors for younger faculty. These mentors would be called "Senior Research Fellows," and would sign on for a 2-year rotation. Their duties would be to proactively work with faculty members to develop their research ideas, put them to paper, and submit them to competitive programs. We would like to know if anyone does something similar, and how much success you've had with it. Thank you. Robin C.
