Re: The Grant Institute Rusty Okoniewski 24 Aug 2006 08:32 EST

The organization that runs these courses is most skillful in marketing
them. They rarely affiliate with Sponsored Research offices on the
campuses that "host" them...but rather use the "continuing education"
arm of the college or university. Sometimes they make their own
arrangements and just sort of appear on campus! Somehow, however, they
always seem to gain access to the E-mail list for the campus and they
send mulitple E-mails to all faculty, staff and administration implying
that the program is hosted by the university.

Having said that, I have, over the years, read a few fairly good
reviews of their classes. I have also read many more very mediocre
reviews. In my opinion, it appears that the skilled grants person might
not find this offering to be very helpful...but a novice would probably
learn a few things.

I offer the following suggestion:
SRA and NCURA both offer excellent training programs at several levels.
I would be more inclined to check those out. I have attended sessions
at both organizations and generally found them to be very good. Also,
the contacts you would make at a national or international organization
meeting like SRA or NCURA are invaluable resources. (NCURA's
"Fundamentals" class is an excellent program for novices.)

I hope that helps you.
Sincerely,

Rusty Okoniewski
