Re: The Grant Institute Rosemary Ruff 24 Aug 2006 07:53 EST

I thought you might be interested in our experience here at UARK. They
contacted me and asked me if I was interested in sponsoring a workshop
here. I declined for various reasons. Next, they contacted our student
union and asked about renting space to do a workshop. The student union
called me and asked me if I was sponsoring or had an objections to them
coming. The answer to both of those was "No." The space was duly rented
(I was not involved so don't know the terms).

Next thing I know, our entire email directory, faculty, staff, and
students, was getting emails announcing the workshop. It didn't say that
the University was sponsoring... but it was implied. And, the emails kept
coming and coming and coming. I checked their website and, again, they
didn't say that the University was sponsoring but it was implied so I
contacted them. The conversation we had was composed primarily of them
ignoring my protestations of the email barrage and the implied sponsorship
and asking me question after question about why I wouldn't sponsor - in
short trying to convince me that I was making a very big mistake. I asked
that they stop the repeated bulk emails which they did not do.

Before I could call them back, our Provost also got tired of the barrage of
emails and asked my office to see if we could get them to stop. I tackled
the problem again. This time, I firmly told them that we wanted the emails
stopped and that we wanted them to explicitly state that the workshop was a
private enterprise which was not being sponsored by the University. They
did stop the emails and, next time I checked, the workshop here in
Fayetteville had been cancelled. I have heard nothing since.
