Position Overview:
Contract Negotiations is a department within the Office of the Vice
Provost for Research and the University of Kansas Center for Research,
Inc. It is responsible for negotiating award terms and conditions of
sponsored and other research related agreements prior to acceptance by
the university; identifying research compliance issues; and preparing
and negotiating subrecipient agreements. It manages nearly 750
agreements annually and plays a significant role in the administration
of approximately $220 million in sponsored proposals and $120 million in
awards for research and training. This is a key position in the daily
research administrative operations of the Office of the Vice Provost for
Research.
Responsibilities and percent of time:
*Assist members in the Contract Negotiations unit in the following
areas:
*Primary phone and reception contact for unit *Liaison to other KU
offices; federal and state agencies; private and public granting
agencies; *Supervision of student employees *Create and maintain
effective and efficient electronic and paper filing systems *Write,
organize and prepare outgoing communications *Review and evaluate budget
material and determine needed actions *Track all contractual documents
at all stages *Maintain departmental contact; stock office supplies;
maintain equipment, and manage general office functions
Contract negotiation (45%)
*Review research, material transfer, and nondisclosure agreements from
external sponsors for compliance with University policies; *Negotiate
and develop contract terms and conditions in accord with University
research policies relating to classified research, intellectual
property, liability and indemnification, publication rights, and
licensing; *Prepare subrecipient agreements and communicate and
negotiate with subrecipient organizations as needed; *Communicate
verbally and in writing with attorneys and administrators in the
federal, state, and local governments, as well as private corporations
and foundations; *Coordinate sponsored research activities with other
departments throughout the university community; *Use high-level
analytical skills and make independent decisions on topics of vital
importance to the university research community.
Additional duties as assigned (10%)
*Assist with the research education of faculty and staff; attend and/or
participate in other research administration related meetings as
requested; other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in liberal arts and sciences, or business, or three
years of experience working in university research administration 2. Six
months experience reading and comprehending contracts or demonstrable
experience handling negotiations 3. Strong written communication skills
as evidenced by application materials and previous work experience 4.
Experience working with university policies and procedures or similar
systems
5. Experience with computer applications to create word processing
documents, spreadsheets and databases
Preferred Qualifications 1. Strong verbal communication skills as
evidenced in previous work experience 2. Ability to work cooperatively
as part of a team 3. Work experience in sponsored research
administration at a university 4. Work experience negotiating,
reviewing, editing and writing complex contracts or agreements.
5. Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret agency, federal, or
state regulations 6. Experience with implementation of research policies
7. Graduate degree
