I think somewhere I read that as a rule of thumb a faculty member who is
less than 5 years from the date they completed their dissertation is
considered a Beginning Investigator.
Hope this helps.

Subject: [RESADM-L] NSF Beginning Investigator
Hello everyone ...
I need clarification on a "Beginning Investigator" qualification issue.
I've done a cursory look through the GPG and the NSF website, but you
guys are faster and just as reliable.
I have a PI who has received a previous NSF award, but it was an
equipment-only grant. That's his only federal funding. Does he still
qualify as a beginning investigator?
