Re: Sad News Richard Bailey 26 Jun 2006 16:53 EST

Ms Robb,

I was deeply saddened to hear the news that Mr. Chermside had passed
away last week. Unlike many on this listsrv, I had only known "Chuck"
for a short time -- we met in May at the SRA Western Section meeting
in Portland, Oregon -- yet he treated me as if he had known me for
years. I was a "newbie" who was attending the meeting to see if I
really wanted to make a mid-life career change to Research
Administration. We struck up a conversation when he learned that I
used to live in Richmond. Throughout the meeting, he patiently
answered my dumb questions and offered sound advice and much
encouragement. When I asked him if I should attend the basic RA
training program in Charleston, S.C., he said "Do it!" before I
completed the sentence.

Unfortunately, I didn't have much opportunity to talk with him in
Charleston or to say that he was instrumental in my decision to make
the jump to Research Administration. I was preparing to send him an
email this week asking for his advice. I know that he would have
taken the time to respond to my questions.

His spirit lives on in the hearts and minds of the countless people
whose lives he touched and who he trained, mentored and inspired. It
also lives on in the profession of Research Administration itself for
which he worked so tirelessly to promote.

Chuck told me that RA people were among the most open, kind and
generous people I would ever meet. That described him to a T. He was
a true Virginian. I will miss him.
