Re: Announcing the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP) Susan Meslang 22 Jun 2006 13:36 EST

Is this organization interested in colleges or 2 year institutions? We
do a lot of work with industry and have received grants to support these
activities.

Posting at the request of Bob Killoren.

An invitation from Bob Killoren:

Dear Colleagues,

More than ever it is important for institutions of higher education to
look
for additional sources of sponsored funding to support their
programs. With federal funding for research is flat or even shrinking
in
some areas, many of you will find it essential to work more with
companies.

I'm writing to tell you about an excellent opportunity for your
institution
to become part of an exciting new venture to enhance relationships
between
industry and universities. The National Academies' Government
University
Industry Research Roundtable (GUIRR) will be hosting the University
Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP), a new organization developed

along the lines of the very successful Federal Demonstration
Partnership
(FDP), except this time we'll be focusing primarily on
university-industry
interactions.

Many universities have it as part of their mission to work with their
communities and states in economic development, to work with companies
in
licensing inventions developed under federal sponsorship, and to
conduct
research for and in cooperation with companies. Strong
university-industry
relationships also provide job opportunities for students, challenging
real
world problems for both students and faculty to work on, and
opportunities
for establishing scholarships, research professorships, and endowed
chairs.

The UIDP is all about promoting healthy university-industry
relationships
by providing an ongoing forum for companies and institutions of higher

education to discuss significant problems affecting contract
negotiations;
to review and improve federal policies and procedures that affect U/I
relationships; to develop streamlined processes that help make research

contracting and licensing more efficient; and to create new networking

opportunities for industry and academia.

I encourage you to look into having your institution become a member of
the
UIDP. To find out more about the UIDP consult the following web
address
and look for the material under the heading "Re-Engineering the
Partnership: Summit of the University-Industry Congress":

On this page you can find publications of the Congress that were
published
by NCURA in coordination with GUIRR and the Industrial Research
Institute. You will also find many presentations made by industry and

university participants at the Congress.

Institutions can become members by signing an MOU and contributing
$4,000
per year that will go solely to supporting the UIDP. Two companies
and a
university have already become Founding Partners by contributing
$50,000
each to get the UIDP up and running. Major funding also appears likely

from the Kaufmann Foundation and the National Science Foundation.

The MOU can be found at:

Send completed MOU's to:

Phone: 202-334-1706
Fax: 202-334-1369
Email: <mailto:xxxxxx@nas.edu>xxxxxx@nas.edu

After receipt and processing, you will receive an invoice for the first

year's dues. If you need to pay out of current year funds, let
Merrilea
know and she can get you an invoice right away. Most of us have to
wait
until next year's funds come ;-)

If you have any questions, send me an email at
<mailto:xxxxxx@osu.edu>xxxxxx@osu.edu. I'm in the process of
moving to Ohio State so that's the safer email address for me during
the
transition.

Cheers to all,
Bob K
