Re: xfd overwrite problem Elsa Nadler 30 May 2006 14:03 EST
May I recommend that you rename the file every time you save it...like May30threePM... I renamed my xfd files every day so that if anything happened, I could go back to the previous day's work and not lose much. That also gave me a nice track record. After a couple of days, you can delete old files that you don't need. Elsa Elsa G. When we tried to email the files back and forth between pre-award administrators (our budgeting and proposal functions are separate), we'd lose data. We had to establish a shared drive to avoid it. I don't know the full technical reason, but it has to do with the truncated associated file (if your original is named Hammer_345.xfd, it creates a truncated version called, say, Hamm~1.xfd. We believe that file actually stores much of the data [my techie husband explained it to me, or tried to], and if it is not also emailed/transferred, then the original file loses the connection to that truncated data storage and "loses data".) I did many, many experiment to try to isolate the problem and I could only get it down to as far as the truncated version playing some role in the data loss. Unfortunately, storing both files on a shared drive is the only solution I'm able to offer you. It was a simple, easy solution for us and since then, we've had no issues whatsoever. I can edit them, save them by overwriting the same file, and open them back up with no problem on my PC. When I email or upload the same file in Sakai, THE UNEDITED FILE APPEARS! Now I wonder just what the reviewers will be looking at. There was no reason for rejections since everything was completed in both versions. This was a HRSA app through the Double "G". Fortunately, I was able to catch on before the NIH apps went in. William D.
