Re: Question for Foundation Directory Subscribers Dawn Underwood 26 Apr 2006 09:41 EST

At Indiana State University, the main campus library maintains an 18
user license for the institution. Access to the single username and
password is protected so that ISU users must login as a student or
employee to reach it. The Sponsored Programs office used to purchase the
two user option, and the library maintained the hard copy edition. The
current arrangement works better for our budget and we are able to use
the tool when we conduct workshops.

Contrary to the experiences of others, we have found the directory
useful in seeking grant funding. However, these funding sources do
generally require relationship building (translates to "Time"). It is
especially useful for those searching for funding for community projects
who need to locate foundations within the state. The 990 information
which lists prior year's fundings is useful for those who plan a
submission to a nationally focused foundation (ie: Coca-Cola, Tiger
Woods, etc). This detail is a reality check for those who think that
foundation money is easy to get in large chunks.

Of course, whenever we assist someone who is interested in foundation
funding, we work with our development folks so we aren't stepping on
toes.

I agree with Joni. AND...I think it is a bit mean and misleading to
direct the average faculty member needing $$ to the average Foundation
Center write-up if you don't also tell them the likelihood of getting a
response, let alone a grant, from a foundation with which you have no
previous contact. I usually tell people that chance of success is
somewhere slightly above zero. Is there any real data?

We signed up for the site a little over a year ago, and I believe we
got 9 logins or thereabouts, with the subscription. We were not able to
provide it directly to the faculty, but offered to do searches for them,
or to invite them to use a spare workstation we have in the office to do
searches for themselves. I explored the possibility of a site license,
but it was expensive and I decided to wait and see how beneficial it
was. It turned out that, for us, the program was virtually useless and
we cancelled our subscription recently when it came up for renewal.

Subject: [RESADM-L] Question for Foundation Directory Subscribers

Dear Colleagues,

We are current subscribers to the Foundation Directory Online (
http://fconline.fdncenter.org/) and, if I am not mistaken, our
subscription package limits the number of login sites. At this time, we
have not made the username/password available to faculty and staff
around campus. I wondered, for those of you who do subscribe to this
service, how do you maintain accessibility to the site? Do you provide
access to individuals outside the Sponsored Research offices? Do you
field funding requests and perform the searches in the Directory
in-house and then distribute the results to the requesters?

Thank you in advance for your responses!
