Can anybody share experiences about effort expended by department administrators when graduate students from Communist countries or countries classified by the State Dept as sponsors of terrorism to matriculate at a US university?

Every university has an office of foreign student affairs that handles much of the paper work (thank goodness!), but I wonder about the additional hoops that the hosting department may have to jump through in these special circumstances.
