Does anyone happen to know of guides written for PIs, including things like
how not to promise the farm when writing a SOW, and efficient ways to get
progress reports done and out the door?

Amy,
You may also want to consider "Research Administration and Management" by
Elliott Kulakowski and Lynn Chronister. It was recently published and many
- if not all - of the contributors are people like us who "work in the
trenches" each day.
The publisher is Jones and Bartlett - 800-832-0094
ISBN No. 0-7637-3277-X

Subject: [RESADM-L] reference guides
I am considering purchasing two different NCURA publications ("Sponsored
Research Administration: A Guide to Effective Strategies and Recommended
Practices" and "A Guide to Managing Federal Grants for Colleges and
Universities") and am wondering if anyone can offer me an explanation of
the differences between the two -- focus, strengths, weaknesses. Is there
considerable overlap between the two? Is one more of a policy reference
whereas the other a big picture guide? I am at an undergraduate
institution and noticed that the Sponsored Research Administration guide
includes a section for predominantly undergraduate institutions.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
Amy Myerson
