Carolyn-
Your message was passed on to me by UCA's Assistant Provost, Charlotte Cone. There are several operational models for the structure of Continuing Education units within a university. Some continuing education units are administratively centralized and academically decentrailized. This is the model that is in place at UCA. It simply means that all UCA credit courses offered in non-traditional formats (e.g.; distance education, off-schedule, off-campus, or on a grant-funded or contract basis) are delivered through the Division with a separate sequence number for scheduling, enrollment, and fiscal accountability. The courses offered through the Division are "owned" by the departments and approved and evaluated through the University's usual curriculum process.
Another model is administratively centralized and academically centralized, which means that the Division of Continuing Education operates like a college and has the authority to offer credit courses or degrees.
Finally, there is the model of administratively decentralized and academically decentralized, which means each college is responsible for its own continuing education programs.
There are many variations or hybrid versions of these basic operational models. The University Continuing Education Association is a wonderful resources for topics related to continuing and adult education. The website is www.UCEA.edu
The possibilities for Continuing Education program funding depend upon the operational structure and focus of the Continuing Education unit. There are grants available from foundations, professional associations, corporations, and public and government organizations for which collaborative proposals may be written. Some grants cover the cost of continuing education attached to college credit, other grants focus on non-credit professional development opportunities, or workforce development skills or soft skills.
Hope this helps! Good luck! Kim

Subject: [RESADM-L] Grant programs for continuing education?
Dear colleagues,
We have a continuing education department that has expressed an interest in obtaining grant funding. Other than some of the adult education, skill-retooling type grants, is there anything in particular for continuing ed? I realize this is a pretty broad question and the answers will depend on how our continuing ed department functions. I am trying to get clarification on whether they function like a department or a semi-autonomous institute, but if you have any ideas in the meantime I'd appreciate them.
Many thanks.
