I agree.  Good assessment, Barbara.  I attended this training years ago
and found the notebook of resources quite helpful as I was just
beginning to write proposals for a small college and some small
nonprofits.  It is very elementary, very basic but a good foundation,
especially for people involved with small nonprofits...definitely not
research oriented.

Debra,
The Grantsmanship Center has been around for a long time and offers
their workshops around the country. Their program is excellent and is
primarily intended for people who want to learn how to identify and
match their interests with potential sponsors and then develop a
proposal. Note that the type of proposal writing they teach is for
community/social service/educational types of projects; I would not
recommend it for research proposal writing. The attendee will get the
most out of the program by having a project idea and some background
information (documentation of need, literature search, etc.) because
he/she will actually be given the opportunity to write the proposal,
have a mock peer review, and come away with a proposal that is just
about ready to be submitted to a sponsor. At least that's how it worked

when I attended years ago. Over the years, I have occasionally
identified individuals at my institution (generally program
administrators, not faculty) who showed proposal writing promise and
motivation to develop their skills. The Grantsmanship Center program is

the one that I always recommended out to these individuals' supervisors

as an appropriate way to learn and build the skills. Of course, I
always
recommended that the individual have a project idea and do the homework

before attending. The feedback from the attendees has always been very

positive.
