Actually, we keep records until 3 years after the final FSR for the Grant  and I believe that's the intent of the recommendation.

The NIH GPS states:
"Record Retention and Access
Grantees generally must retain financial and programmatic records, supporting documents, statistical records, and all other records that are required by the terms of a grant, or may reasonably be considered pertinent to a grant, for a period of 3 years from the date the annual FSR is submitted."

I would include any data generated in the "all other records that are ...  pertinent to a grant" category. COGR recommends at least 3 years post FSR (which is similar to the IRB record requirement).

There could be other time frames depending on the uses of the data. Good questions to ask are whether the data supports a patent application or does the journal publishing the work have specific retention guidance.

Hi everyone,

I have been asked a question, and try as I might, I can't find the answer.  I'm hoping that my wise colleagues on this list can help.  The question is this:  How long must a researcher or institution retain data, slides, samples, etc., from NIH funded research after the funding for the project ends?
I've asked several people and gotten several different answers.  I can't find anything on the NIH website or on any other government sites.

Can anyone help and point me to a reference from NIH or the government that I can quote to our researchers?
