Re: Help finding information

I can't point specifically to a place but the answer is: Depends.
If for instance the NIH $$ supported a clinical trial.....
The subjects were minors.... Data must be kept until they are adults.
If the work was in part funded by a Canadian company..... Ten years
If the work was involved with an FDA approved trial.... On the order of
7 years
As for your own institution's guidelines, it might not follow in line
(longer time) than the above. For instance in the data is involved in
legal battles or misconduct.
Someone with knowledge of patent law may say something about data
retention could lead to keeping it for specific period of time.
As for the basic sciences, I'll let someone else comment.

Subject: [RESADM-L] Help finding information
Hi everyone,
I have been asked a question, and try as I might, I can't find the
answer. I'm hoping that my wise colleagues on this list can help. The
question is this: How long must a researcher or institution retain
data, slides, samples, etc., from NIH funded research after the funding
for the project ends? I've asked several people and gotten several
different answers. I can't find anything on the NIH website or on any
other government sites.
Can anyone help and point me to a reference from NIH or the government
that I can quote to our researchers?
Thanks in advance for your wise counsel.
Carole
