Re: ideas for ultimate pre-award system Francis, Richard A. 12 Dec 2005 16:47 EST
We evaluated several systems, and are planning to go ahead with MIT's COEUS, which has successfully submitted S2S to grants.gov. The COEUS submission solution to the PureEdge problems looks very good to me. One aspect I like about it is that the same system for online budget development and endorsement workflow is designed to output the information for S2S, with some sophisticated error-checking prior to S2S submission. COEUS 4.1 is much more PI-friendly than previous versions, with an integrated web portal. The product is still not "glamorous", and there are no glossy brochures or aggressive salespeople marketing it, but the product has been incrementally improved for years by incorporating feedback from users. It is also multi-institutional capable, meaning that one implementation could be used effectively to host For our campus, the lack of integrated true reporting (not just queries) in COEUS is not a big issue, as we would rather use our institution's enterprise solution for reporting anyway (Crystal Reports). We are in the process of seeking approval for COEUS from our campus ERP committee. The ERP software we are in the middle of implementing is SCT Banner, which did not provide all the functionality we need for pre-award. COEUS is really one of very few that did, and has some very powerful functionality. I would suggest you give COEUS a good look to see if it would be a good match for your institution. Good luck! It's cold outside and I am sitting here with cup of hot chocolate and some peanut brittle. No big proposal deadlines today. Life is good! We are planning to enhance our in-house pre-award research administration system after the first of the year. We already have a very good pre and post award system but we want to make it even better. I am reflecting on what the ultimate system would encompass and would appreciate your thoughts. In coming up with your ideas think about. What does your current system lack? What is most frustrating about it. What do your wish it could do? What type of information/reporting do you wish it could produce that is currently lacking? Answer to the group or directly to me.
