We do not discourage our faculty from pursuing these small foundation grants, either. In fact, it may be suggested as a way for new/inexperienced faculty to begin a funded career. However, we do try to encourage them to use these grants as pilot projects to get them ready for bigger federal opportunities rather than depend on these sources primarily. Another consideration is the generally lower F&A on foundation grants (if any), and often challenging IP or other restrictions in the grant agreement. Deborah (Debbie) L. Smith, Ed.D.
