I guess I should have footnoted my response by saying that we are an
undergraduate only institution (700 students and 70 full-time faculty).
With only a dozen or so active grant seekers, I can be more personal.
However, that being said, by making certain that faculty know I am a
resource and not a filter, it breaks down the whole "deadline" thing and
they are more likely to contact me the second they know they are
applying.
