I would be interested in knowing the specifics regarding what you consider "exceptional training in grantsmanship" to be. Thanks. -----Original Message----- From: Research Administration List [mailto:xxxxxx@HRINET.ORG] On Behalf Of Jennifer Shambrook Sent: Thursday, September 22, 2005 11:08 AM To: xxxxxx@HRINET.ORG Subject: Re: [RESADM-L] Postdoc experience Policies to enrich??? Not trying to be a smarty-pants here, but I would say that if you want to enrich and improve the postdoctoral experience at your institution, you should focus first on what will help them prepare for a career in research... such as a good mentoring program with a variety of mentorship experiences (as well as a primary mentor), support for scientific meetings, the usual training in scientific integrity, and exceptional training in grantsmanship (which includes an intensive in-house review of anything they want to submit to outside agencies). After you decide the experiences you want them to have, then start thinking about any "policies" that might be built around those experiences. Let structure follow function, rather than the other way round. xoxo -Jennifer Jennifer Morgan Shambrook, MHA Associate Chair for Research Administration Co-Director Division of Public Psychiatry Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science Medical University of South Carolina 67 President Street, Suite 504 Charleston, South Carolina 29425 voice: 843-792-0191 fax: 843-792-0048 email: xxxxxx@musc.edu >>> xxxxxx@ECOSTUDIES.ORG 09/22/05 11:00AM >>> Morning All, We have formed a committee that is attempting to enrich and improve the PostDoc experience at IES.
